ICC Champions Trophy 2025: The fixture and Schedule of the ICC Champions Trophy are out now, and excitement and hype are rising. We also have some squad updates for the coveted ICC Tournament and here we have all you need to know before the ICC event. 
It is going to be an eight-team tournament this year as well and the top eight teams of the globe will clash in the 50-over ODI format. As ICC has finalized the hybrid model, the tournament will feature 15 matches and be played across Pakistan and Dubai.
Pakistan are going to be the official host of the tournament with most of the matches taking place in Pakistan with only India matches scheduled to be played outside Pakistan due to geopolitical and border tensions between the host nation and India. 
The eight teams are divided into two groups- Group A and Group B. The tournament is set to begin on 19 February in Karachi with Pakistan taking on New Zealand. The final of the ICC event is set to be played on 9 March.

South Africa vs Pakistan: This marks Pakistan's third bilateral series win in South Africa, but for the first time, they’ve achieved a clean sweep on South African soil. Saim Ayub's brilliant century and Sufiyan Muqeem's four-wicket haul were the standout performances that etched Pakistan’s historic victory in golden letters.
South Africa faced a historic setback, suffering their first-ever clean sweep in a bilateral ODI series at home after a 36-run loss to Pakistan in a rain-affected match at the Wanderers. This defeat adds to a tough year for the Proteas, who have managed to win just one of their three ODI series in 2024. Under white-ball coach Rob Walter, who took charge in February 2023, they’ve won only two out of six ODI series, raising concerns about their current form.
On the other hand, the Pakistan camp erupted in celebrations as they etched their name in history, becoming the first team to whitewash South Africa in an ODI bilateral series on their home soil. Rizwan and his squad triumphed Down Under and have now blanked South Africa at home, building immense momentum. With the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, Pakistan couldn’t be happier with these outstanding results.

South Africa won the toss for the third time and chose to bowl first. Pakistan’s innings got off to a rocky start as they lost their first wicket on the second ball of the match. However, Saim Ayub rose to the challenge with confidence. He forged a crucial 114-run partnership with Babar Azam for the second wicket, followed by a 93-run stand with Mohammad Rizwan for the third wicket, setting a strong foundation.

Ayub’s stellar knock of 101 off 99 balls ended when Corbin Bosch found the edge of his bat shortly after he reached his century. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan also shone with the bat, each scoring half-centuries to stabilize the innings. However, Pakistan faced a few setbacks, with mini-collapses on either side of Salman Agha and Tayyab Tahir's crucial sixth-wicket partnership.
The duo added a quickfire 74 runs off 47 balls, propelling Pakistan’s total past the 300-run mark. Their approach of steady starts followed by explosive finishes once again proved effective, giving them a strong 308-run score to defend. 
After choosing to bowl first in overcast conditions, South Africa missed opportunities to capitalize early on. Despite Kagiso Rabada repeatedly beating the bat, they struggled to maintain consistency as the game progressed. The spin duo of Bjorn Fortuin and Aiden Markram delivered 13 overs between them at a respectable economy rate of 5.6 runs per over, but the pace attack faltered.

Marco Jansen conceded 58 runs in his nine overs, while Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka, playing his first ODI at his home ground, shared 15 overs, giving away 119 runs and managing a wicket each. The lack of discipline from the seamers ultimately cost South Africa in critical moments of the game.
The chase started and South Africa's top-order batting concerns continued. South Africa’s chase began on a rocky note, losing both openers in the first seven overs. Temba Bavuma fell to Naseem Shah, slicing a catch to point, while Shaheen Afridi sent Tony de Zorzi back with a sharp, awkward return catch.
Aiden Markram’s stay was brief—dropped on 8 but bowled by debutant Sufiyan Muqeem with his very first ball in ODI cricket. There was a flicker of hope when Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen added 40 runs for the fourth wicket. But Mohammad Hasnain delivered a fiery yorker to uproot Van der Dussen, and Rizwan’s brilliant catch behind the stumps dismissed David Miller.

Klaasen then lit up the chase with a blazing 29-ball fifty, smashing Afridi for four consecutive boundaries and more in the next over. Just as things looked dangerous for Pakistan, Afridi struck back with a short ball to dismiss the set batter. The game still wasn’t in the bag for Pakistan as Corbin Bosch fought hard, keeping South Africa’s hopes alive even as wickets kept falling.
With just 37 runs needed off 32 balls, Bosch ran out of support as Muqeem cleaned up the tail in style. The debutant claimed three of the last four wickets, including two in two balls, securing Pakistan a thrilling 36-run win and a historic series sweep.

The International Cricket Council seems to have been ?in hot water? since they passed the hosting rights to PCB. After having made Pakistan the hosts of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the ICC faced serious opposition from the BCCI as they denied travelling to the neighbouring nation.

The PCB, after being asked by the ICC to host the Champions Trophy, had planned to host all matches of the tournament in the nation and had proposed four different venues for the same. As of now, the BCCI has informed the ICC that, owing to security concerns, the Government of India has not allowed them to travel with their players to Pakistan. As a result, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Cricket_Council">International Cricket Council</a> has proposed a new model, where they have opined to shift the matches against India out of Pakistan to the city of Dubai in the UAE. This arrangement looks similar to the previous Asia Cup held in Pakistan, where India featured their games in Sri Lanka. This proposal has been passed by the ICC to the PCB officials, thus asking for confirmation of the same. Accepting this model will allow Pakistan to retain hosting rights, though some matches will be played outside its borders.

The PCB is reportedly in continuous consultation with the Pakistani government, as both of them are exploring every potential action and angle. The PCB is taking this refusal from the Indian board as a severe backlash to the honor of their board and the pride of the nation. The PCB might take BCCI to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport and also refuse to feature against India in ICC events. Last, since the 1996 World Cup, Pakistan had the first-ever opportunity to hold a major ICC tournament in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Pakistan, who were since 2008 removed from even the co-hosting roles, looks not to accept any hybrid model, especially when in recent times giants like England and Australia have visited the nation.

Reports from Sports Tak have claimed that Pakistan is quite likely to reject the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy; in such a case, the entire Champions Trophy might be shifted to South Africa.

 Last time around, when India refused to travel to Pakistan, as a result, Pakistan was taken off the role of hosts in 2008, and the Champions Trophy was hosted in 2009 by South Africa. The ICC is hence considering the South African nation for hosting the Champions Trophy for another time. India will not be travelling to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy, the cricket tournament that will be held in the coming year. The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has communicated their opinion to PCB that, owing to security reasons, their games in the Champions Trophy are to be shifted somewhere outside Pakistan, with the most likely venue being Dubai. ?This has been our stance, and there is no reason to change that. We have written to them and asked them to shift our games to Dubai,? a source in the know said.

The Champions Trophy is being held for the first time since 2017, the edition which was won by the Pakistan cricket team. The top 8 ranked teams in the ICC will participate in the Champions Trophy, which will possibly be scheduled to be held on the 19th of February. The ICC has confirmed PCB?s location of Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi as the host grounds. Just like last year?s Asia Cup, when India moved their matches out of Pakistan to Sri Lanka, they stood firm on their stand over not playing the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The Indian team will be travelling to Australia in 2 days, as they will remain in Australia to feature in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and get their players adapted to the Australian tracks. As per reports, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will not travel to Australia for the first two tests, as he might be absent owing to family reasons. Jasprit Bumrah might be seen in the role of Indian skipper in his absence, while also likes of Abhimanyu Easwaran or KL Rahul might be seen featuring as the Indian opener in the absence of the opening batter Rohit.

The Government of India has not given any official confirmation to the Indian Cricket Team regarding travelling to Pakistan for the upcoming tournament.



The uncertainty regarding the participation of India seems to be more serious with Richard Thompson and Richard Gould, chairman and CEO of the England &amp; Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stating that a countless number of alternatives will be considered if the Men in Blue are not given the allowance to travel to Pakistan next year for the Champions Trophy, as reported by India-Today.



The Men in Blue and the Green Shirts last played a bilateral-series versus each other 11 years ago in 2013 when Pakistan came on a tour of India.



Ever since 2008, the two fierce-rivals have faced each other on neutral-venues with Pakistan travelling to India for the 2011 ODI World Cup, 2016 T20 International World Cup and most recently the 2023 ODI World Cup.
