IND vs SL 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma-led team India have tied the first ODI of the INDIA Tour of SRI LANKA 2024. Though, it was India's game at one stage, Sri Lanka managed to save the game and the scoreline is still 0-0.
The game was something like topsy-turvy for the entire duration. India was on the top most of the time but Sri Lanka pulled it off in the last 10 overs in both innings.
Batting first, Sri Lanka were six down at 142 runs in the 35th over and then all-rounders Hasaranga, Dhanajaya and Wellalage restored life to the match for Sri Lanka. The trio added 108 runs and that was the match for Sri Lanka.
India started the chase aggressively with skipper Rohit Sharma making damages to the Sri Lankan hopes. Rohit Sharma smashed a 33-ball half-century in the process. India were 75 for no loss and all of a sudden, they lost three wickets for just 12 runs.
India were way ahead in terms of run rate but falling of wickets in regular intervals was the concern. Shivam Dube played a crucial knock down the order and he dragged the game to 1 run needed off more than a dozen balls remaining.
The skipper Charith Asalanka did an excellent job with the ball in his hands. He caught Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh LBW in two consecutive balls and the match tied.
Rohit Sharma on Match Result
Rohit Sharma in the post-match talk claimed that he is disappointed with the result. He said, "Little disappointing, 14 balls, 1 run to get."
"The scores are gettable, it's just that you have to bat well to get that score. We batted well in patches. There was no consistent momentum through the game for us. We started really well with the bat but knew the game would start after 10 overs once the spinners came in to bowl. We had the upper hand to start with, then we lost a couple of wickets and fell behind the game," he said.
"With the partnership that KL and Axar had, we again came back into the game pretty well. These things happen. Sri Lanka played well. In the end, it was a fair result. It (pitch) remained the same. There was bite in the first 25 overs when we bowled and it was the same for them as well. As the game went on, the seam wore off for both teams and it was a bit easier to bat," he added.
"It's not where you can just come and play your shots and get runs. You have to apply yourself and dig in really well to get that score. Proud of the way how we fought till the end. The game shifted towards both teams at different times. It was important to hold the nerve and stay in the game. We should?have got that one run," Sharma concluded.
