Gautam Gambhir, BCCI, Sent Big 'Jasprit Bumrah' Warning for England Tests: Told Not to Under Bowl India’s Pace Ace

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI have issued a strong warning to manage Jasprit Bumrah carefully for the five-Test series against England starting June 20, 2025. Experts say Bumrah should not be overworked in these Test matches.

He is not only India’s but also the world’s top test bowler, and bowling too little could affect his fitness and rhythm. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired and Mohammed Shami unfit, Bumrah’s role is crucial, but his workload needs careful handling due to a recent back injury.

Limited Participation Advised

Jasprit Bumrah is India’s top pacer. He is unlikely to play all five Test matches against England due to his back injury. He was selected after the Australia series in January 2025. Ajit Agarkar said medical advice permits Bumrah to play only three matches to avoid further injury.

Former MCA physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik advised Gautam Gambhir not to under-bowl him, as too little bowling could cause more injuries. Kaushik emphasized building Bumrah’s strength to handle second and third spells effectively.

Strategic Management Plan

India’s former bowling coach Bharat Arun suggested a smart plan to keep Bumrah fit. He says Gambhir must adjust Bumrah’s practice based on match overs and focus on recovery and strength training.

Arun believes that if other bowlers like Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna step up, Bumrah can play all five Test matches. This balance is essential because Bumrah is a vital player, having taken 32 wickets against Australia, outsmarting other pacers combined.

Supporting Pace Attack

With Mohammed Shami out, India’s pace attack includes Siraj, Krishna, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, and all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Nitish Reddy. Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill are confident these bowlers can win matches.

Shubman Gill said that without Bumrah, his team has a good mix of bowlers to complete innings, but only Shardul Thakur has experience in England, making Bumrah’s presence crucial in these moments.

Flexible Approach to Selection

Gautam Gambhir has not yet decided which Tests Bumrah will play, and that depends on the series’ results. This flexibility is vital, as overplaying Bumrah could risk injury, while bowling him too little could disrupt his rhythm. Show in sidebar
