Ireland vs England, T20 World Cup 2022 highlights: The match was called off after a rain delay in the 15th over and Ireland registered a resounding win over star-studded England. England could hardly find any momentum while chasing the target and rain sounded the death knell for them in the 15th over. Alex Hales, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes all fell without scoring many runs in the first four overs. David Malan and Harry Brooke also could not advance England's innings and Moeen Ali looked capable of triggering an impossible fight, but it was not enough for the DLS to be enforced when the rain came.

Ireland has thus registered a famous record win, their first in the Super 12 stage of a T20 World Cup, and the result now throws Group 1 open with five teams out of six with two points.

The 2022 T20 World Cup has already produced some surprising results and the pattern continued with Ireland's five-run win over England in a rain-hit contest at the MCG on Wednesday (26 October).

Jos Buttler at the post-match conference

Speaking at the post-match press conference, skipper Jos Buttler felt that his side needed to use the pain of an unexpected defeat as a way to elevate themselves in the rest of their games.

Buttler started it all by saying, "I think we should let it hurt, to be honest. I think days like today are really, really disappointing, and you've got to feel that. There's no point in saying let's sweep it under the carpet and move on. I think we've got to reflect -- we've got to do it quickly obviously with a game soon after, but today should hurt."

Buttler, however, chose not to place the blame on the weather and backed the umpires' call for the players to be fired at the time.

"It was getting quite heavy. Of course, we'd love to stay on and try to hit a couple of sixes if we could, but it got heavy. I think the game was lost before that point. I think we were a long way short of where we needed to be right throughout the game, and Ireland deserved to win," said Buttler.

England was always lagging behind the DLS par score due to a lack of pace and regular wickets, thanks to a brilliant start with the ball from Ireland. Subtle attempts were made by Andrew Balbirnie's men to run down the clock. It was something that caught Butler's eye as well but he was hesitant to point a finger at it.

"Yeah, it's certainly something, whether it's gamesmanship. I knew the rain was coming and could slow the game up. I think we had lost the game before that point. As I mentioned, we had all the things we needed in our favor. If we were ahead, they wouldn't have been slowing the game down. So I think we should take responsibility ourselves, and we should never let it get to that kind of situation," he added.

At the point of the first 10 overs of the Irish innings, Buttler said "I think especially in the first 10 overs with the ball, we were a long way short of the standards we set ourselves in the game before. We let Ireland get away from us, and I thought we dragged it back well in the second half, but that put a lot of pressure on us right from the start."

Now England's next encounter is with Australia, on which Jos said, "Yeah, of course. That's what World Cup cricket is about. Of course, we wanted to be going into that game having won 2 games from 2, but at some point in this tournament, the way it's set up, you're in must-win games the majority of the time. Of course, Friday is already a big occasion playing Australia at the MCG, and it takes on that extra bit now with both teams having lost one game."
