(24 Jan) ICC Test Player Rankings: A major test series for India in the context of the World Test Championship is just around the corner. As India and England are going to be engaged in a five-match red ball series starting 25 January, here we are with the latest updated ICC Test Player Rankings (Rank 1 to 10) before the IND vs ENG Test Series.
India's success in the test format in the recent past has been quite fascinating. They were ICC's Top-ranked test team for a pretty long term before Australia dethroned them a couple of weeks back.
In the most recent ICC Test player rankings, up to eight Indian players are ranked in the top ten in each category (batting, bowling, and all-rounder). The top 10 batting rankings feature two Indian batters, the top 10 bowling rankings feature three Indian bowlers, and the top 10 all-rounder rankings have three Indian players. Indian players lead both the all-rounders and bowling rankings.
India recently played a two-match test series against South Africa and tied the series on an equal score. A near-perfect team game and fabulous individual performances led India to second rank in the World Test Championship points table.
Virat Kohli, who scored the most runs for India in the recent two-match Test Series against South Africa, stepped up three slots to replace former Pakistan captain Babar Azam from number six with a 775 rating after a strong performance in the Cape Town Test against South Africa.
Alongside him, the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma has also seen significant success. The team enjoys the advantages immensely from his aggressive style at the top in the red ball format. With 748 rating points, he is now ranked 10th after his latest efforts.
The skipper of New Zealand, Kane Williamson, continues to lead the Men's Test Batting Rankings with 864 rating points next to his name. Despite his prolonged inactivity, he always stole the show when he entered the park.
England's Joe Root is ranked second with 859 rating points. Steve Smith remained in third position with 818 rating points after a dull test series against Pakistan. Babar Azam dropped to eighth place in the most recent ICC Test Batting rankings after a lackluster Australia trip.
When it comes to bowling rankings, India's Ravi Ashwin has been at the top for a long time now. The spin guru Ashwin is ranked first with 863 rating points. Pat Cummins, an Australian captain who took Rabada's spot, follows him. Jasprit Bumrah is placed fourth in the most recent revised rankings, while Jadeja is fifth.
After his incredible six-wicket performance against the Proteas in Cape Town, Mohammad Siraj also made a significant jump in the test format, moving up from 30th to 17th place. Additionally, Josh Hazlewood climbed four spots to tie English bowler James Anderson for seventh place.
England's Ollie Robinson is ranked 6th in the Bowling rankings with 762 ratings.
In the All-rounders ranks, not much has changed. With 434 rating points, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja sits top of the standings, followed by fellow countryman Ashwin. The difference in rating points between first and second is substantial, with Ashwin coming in second with 341 rating points.
Axar Patel and Joe Root, an England player, are tied for fifth place. Although Joe Root is best recognized for his batting abilities, he also had a great Ashes 2023 with the ball, earning a spot on the all-rounder's list. England's Chris Woakes is ranked 11th in the All-rounder's tally.
