IND vs NZ: Most Runs in ODI World Cups: Another day in the business and another record is on the verge of being broken by the Indian maestro batter Virat Kohli. For the last couple of years, it has been Virat Kohli's routine to either create new records or break the previous ones and etch his name in the history books. Once again, another record is in danger of being bossed by Virat Kohli as he heads to the India vs New Zealand semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Kohli, who is currently, the player with the most runs in the ODI World Cup 2023, is on the verge of becoming the second-highest scorer in the history of the World Cups. The Indian batter needs 119 runs to surpass legendary Australian batter Ricky Ponting in the coveted list of players who have scored the most runs in World Cup history.
While Virat Kohli's total runs scored in the World Cups stands at 1624 in 35 matches, Ricky Ponting's stood at 1743 after playing out 46 games in the elite competition. Kohli's average (58.00) is far better than what Ricky had (45.86) during his cricketing career. Virat's 1624 runs came with the help of four centuries and 11 half-centuries, while Ricky Ponting had five tons and six fifties in his 1743 runs.
Notably, Virat is currently placed third on the list of players with the most runs in World Cup history and is only behind the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.
The decorated list of players also features Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who sits atop the chart with over 2200 runs in 45 matches at an average of 56.95. Tendulkar scored six centuries and 15 half-centuries.
A 119-run knock will take Virat ahead of Ricky Ponting in the aforementioned list. Moreover, if Virat manages to score a century, then he will become the batter with the most number of ODI tons. Virat currently equals Sachin Tendulkar with 49 centuries apiece in the ODIs.
