IPL 2025 Retention Rules: 6 Retentions, RTM Rules Back, and a Huge Jump in Purse Amount: In-Detail Report

There has been an immense buzz over the rules of the IPL 2025, as the teams keenly awaited the outcome before the mega-auctions. Alongside retention rules and the Right to Match rules, what has been added to the pile by the IPL governing body council is the whopping increase in the net purse amount.
Also, the impact player rule will be retained in this upcoming addition; hence, teams can look to have senior players who can use their unique skills for only one half of the game to the benefit of their team.
The IPL committee made another big revelation that out of the number of retentions to be made, any number of Indian and foreign players could be retained by the teams, while they have limited the number of two maximum uncapped players to be retained.
Retention Rules
They have allowed up to the retention of 5 players, and in case any team wants to retain them all, then the following amounts are set for the players:
1. The first three retentions will mark a whopping worth of INR 18 crore, 14 crore, and finally 11 crore.
2. The remaining two spots will splurge in an amount of INR 18 crores and 14 crores.
3. This has accounted for the whopping INR 75 crores to be deducted from the total purse, which has been raised by 20 crores to the new overall purse amount of INR 120 crores.
With the uncapped player brought back for the first time since the 2021 mega-auction, the uncapped players will now be given the amount of 4 crores to be retained and any international player who has retired for more than 4 years, like MS Dhoni, might be retained under this category.
Ahead of the 2022 mega-auction, MS Dhoni was bought for an INR 12 crore amount, which can be reduced to a minor 4 crore if he is retained as an uncapped player for the upcoming edition.
Impact Player rule retained
Though there has been immense criticism as well as concerns shown from veteran players that the impact rule might be detrimental to the development of all-rounders, the BCCI has kept the impact player rule intact for the upcoming seasons up to 2027.
The RTM Card rule is also in place for the mega-auction
The RTM rule, which was started in the 2017 mega-auction and was followed in the 2022 mega-auction as well, gives a franchise the opportunity to buy back a player during the auction; this is applicable for a player of the same team that has been released.
During the auction, after the highest bid has been made on a player and the bidding is over, a team can use their RTM card to bring back the player for the said final cost.
Injury Replacements
In IPL 2024, the injured players could be replaced up to the 7th match injury; however, in the 2025 edition, teams can seek replacements of injured players until the 12th match of the season.
The IPL has also decided on the activation of player loans, though no such rule has been played before, as this rule could only be activated once the season begins.
IPL introduces match fees
The IPL 2025 will mark the inclusion of match fees for players, as this would boost the earnings of the players. They have introduced a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game, which means a huge amount will be added as a part of the player contracts. Every franchise will allocate an amount of INR 12.60 crore as match fees.
