IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings secure Qualifier one entry as they crush Mumbai in Jaipur
Punjab Kings (PBKS) secure their spot in the first Qualifier with a convincing WIN! After suffering consecutive defeats that threatened their chances of finishing in the top two, they made a strong comeback and now have two opportunities to reach the final. On the other hand, five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) saw fortune smile upon them with every other outcome favoring their position, but they failed to capitalize on it themselves. They will now need to navigate the Eliminator path as they pursue a record sixth title.
Star batter Suryakumar Yadav felt that his team was short by 15 to 20 runs at the halfway point, and the comfort with which PBKS chased the target confirmed this. Without being rattled by the departure of his opening partner, Priyansh Arya began scoring rapidly, with Josh Inglis also making a strong start. The two batsmen worked well together and cleverly identified the bowlers they could attack.
MI skipper Hardik Pandya called upon his ace, Jasprit Bumrah, to deliver three separate overs outside the Powerplay in hopes of gaining crucial breakthroughs, but the PBKS duo successfully handled the pressure. Although Inglis & Arya didn’t stay until the end, their stand of 109 runs significantly eased the chase, with captain Shreyas completing the job.
After being asked to bat first, Rohit Sharma got off to a shaky beginning, while wicket-keeper batsman Ryan Rickelton hit a few boundaries but failed to build on his start. The middle overs turned into a tough contest, with the Punjab bowling attack breaking partnerships just as the Mumbai-based side seemed ready to create some momentum.
Suryakumar Yadav anchored the innings, with quick contributions from those following him. Nevertheless, the final surge didn’t happen, as Arshdeep Singh allowed only 3 runs in the 20th over, restricting MI to a total of 184.
