Joe Root likely to enter IPL 2023 Auction as he aims comeback for ODI World Cup 2023: In the latest turn of events, former England test skipper, Joe Root is ?seriously? considering throwing his hat at the IPL 2023 auction ring. In his recent conversation, Root touched upon the possibility of him entering the upcoming auction of the Indian Premier League.
Surprisingly, the England batter hasn?t been fortunate enough to feature in the Indian T20 league even once. Though in the 2018 edition of the tournament, Root showed up for the auction, however, he couldn?t tempt any franchise and got no buyers.
The 31-year-old cricketer expressed his desire to get exposure of the elite T20 tournament hosted by India.
?I would certainly debate going into the IPL draw quite seriously and hope to get exposure in that tournament. It would be great to get involved in the continuous enormity of each game and how much it means,? said Joe Root to dailymail.co.uk.
Root, a fine striker of the white ball, has often been found amidst scepticism to feature in the IPL owing to his national commitments and captaincy roles in the past. However, now that he is free from his leadership duties, he is contemplating putting his name in the draw.
He further straightforwardly mentioned his goals for the next couple of years and asserted that he has no plans to take retirement from cricket anytime soon.
?I have no thoughts or feelings of retirement or slowing down or playing fewer formats. If anything, I feel a little bit more freedom with my time. I always used to get rested for the T20s and I feel like I got alienated from the format because I had not played enough of it. You can feel like you are getting left behind a little bit. Now, the next couple of years, might be a good time to explore playing a little bit more of that format and see how far I can take that side of my game,? said the English cricketer.
The Englishmen reckons playing the shortest format will eventually benefit his ODI game. And because he is targeting the ODI World Cup 2023, playing more white-ball cricket would be worthwhile for him.
?That is especially valid because of how we are trying to play now as a Test team. Looking at the game through a T20 lens, will that benefit my Test cricket? With a 50-over World Cup next year, there are areas of my game that can benefit from playing more short-form cricket. When am I going to play some white-ball cricket if I don?t go out and search it out domestically?? Root concluded.
