Pakistan eliminated from the Champions Trophy as New Zealand and India secure Semi Finals spot | Points Table
Mitchell Santner's New Zealand defeated Bangladesh by a margin of five wickets in their second Champions Trophy Group-A clash as they registered their second consecutive win of the tournament. With this win, the Blackcaps have secured their spot in the semi-finals of the competition and Team India has also benefitted from this victory of the Kiwis as they have also successfully qualified for the knockout stage.
In the match between Bangladesh and the Kiwis, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side scored 236 runs on the board while batting first and in response, Mitchell Santner and his men chased down this target with 23 deliveries to spare.
The Bangla Tigers didn't have a good game with the bat as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Skipper Shanto came out to his team's rescue as he played the captain's knock of 77 runs in 110 balls. From Tanzid Hasan, and Mehdi Hasan to the previous game's centurion Towhid Hridoy, all of them kept getting dismissed continuously, but skipper Shanto kept hold of one end and troubled the Kiwi bowlers.
His knock of 77 runs included nine fours and this knock helped his team post a respectable total on the board. Once he got dismissed, things started to look difficult for the Bangladeshi team but tailenders Jakir Ali & Rishad Hossain scored 45 & 26 runs respectively and protected their team from getting embarrassed. If they had not contributed with these knocks, then their team would have gotten all-out below the score of 200.
Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham ensured victory
Chasing a decent target of 237 runs, New Zealand didn't get off to a good start as the duo of Kane Williamson and Will Young returned to the dugout at the score of 15. However, from here, CSK batter Rachin Ravindra (112 runs) took matters into his own hands and went on to score a magnificent century in his debut Champions Trophy encounter versus Bangladesh. Apart from him, wicketkeeper batter Tom Latham also played a good hand with his knock of 55 runs and helped his team cross the finish line.
New Zealand and India in the semi-finals
New Zealand and India have successfully qualified for the eight-team tournament's semi-finals following the Kiwis' victory over the Bangla Tigers. While Najmul Hossain Shanto and his men needed to win this match to stay alive in the tournament, Pakistan were also relying on them to defeat the Kiwis so that they could have a chance of moving forward in the competition but much to the dismay of the Pakistani fans, their Asian neighbors lost versus the Blackcaps and as a result, both teams have been eliminated from the tournament. Team India and New Zealand with four points each to their name in 2 games have secured their semi-finals berth.
