Ready to take India?s captaincy, if the opportunity arrives: Jasprit Bumrah.

Team India?s all-format pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has shed some light on his possible prospects of Indian team captaincy in the near future. In the recently organised press conference, Bumrah said that he is ready to take up the role if it knocks on his doors.

?If given an opportunity, it would be an honour,? said ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the press conference on Monday.

Lately, the debate of the next Indian test skipper has intensified following Virat Kohli?s abrupt surprise to the world to quit his traditional format roles. On late Saturday evening, Kohli dropped his captaincy hat and thanked everyone for supporting him in his seven years captaincy journey in team India.

Kohli, who was foreseen to lead India successfully for a couple of years more, dropped a bombshell following India?s three matches test series defeat against the Protea.?

Well, as of now, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are the two of the most feasible candidates to lead the test team. Sharma, being appointed as test side?s vice-captain becomes an automatic choice to captain the group. However, the Indian selectors are in no hurry to reach a conclusion and want to take their time to announce Virat Kohli?s successor.

Besides Rohit and KL, cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has reckoned Rishabh Pant?s name as well while a few other cricket pundits have asked to take Jasprit Bumrah into the contention.

It must be noted that Jasprit Bumrah was recently elevated to the role of ODI vice-captain after Rohit Sharma failed to recover from his hamstring injury. In Rohit?s absence, KL is appointed as the captain while Jasprit Bumrah will act as his deputy for the three matches ODI series against South Africa.

Though, Bumrah said that he is ready to take the captaincy role, but asserted that he isn?t chasing that.

?Ready to do it if given an opportunity, but that?s something I don?t chase. In any leadership group, I always look at the situation in the same manner, not to take any extra pressure that now I have to be overcautious. Taking responsibility, talking to a lot of players, trying to help them out in the best possible manner has always been my approach and it will be my approach going further,? Bumrah said.

It must be further noted that though Rohit looks the most viable candidate to take Indian captaincy, his loose fitness might hamper him from taking a long term role. Moreover, the all format captaincy is no more an easy task to fulfil, especially under COVID and restricted environment.
