Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa announced his retirement today at the age of 36 through a social media post. The Karnataka-born right-handed batsman was a part of India?s T20 World Cup winning squad in 2007. Although he does not have many accolades in the Blue jersey, he made a name for himself in domestic leagues and especially his outstanding performances in the Indian Premier League made him a household name in Indian cricket.
The 36-year-old has been known for being a wicketkeeper-batsman almost his entire life. He played 46 ODI matches for India and made 934 runs with an average of 25.9. Coming to T20I, he played 13 matches for India and made 249 runs at an average of 24.9 and a strike rate of just 118. However, his true class can be understood by analysing his IPL stats.
Robin Uthappa played 205 matches in the Indian Premier League and made 4952 runs at an average of 27.5 and a strike rate of 130.3. His best years in IPL came in the Kolkata Knight Riders jersey. In IPL 2014, we saw the prime of Uthappa. He scored 660 runs that season and won the Orange cap award comfortably. Back then, he used to be one of the best batters in the Indian Premier League.
Recently, Robin Uthappa played for CSK in IPL after the franchise bought him for 3 Crores in IPL 2021 and for 2 Crores in IPL 2022. He scored 115 and 230 runs in those seasons respectively and was one of the regular starters of the yellow brigade.?
In his retirement post, Robin Uthappa wrote: ?It has been my greatest honour to represent my country and my state, Karnataka. However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket.??
He penned down a two-page emotional letter for his fans and well-wishers and posted that on social media along with a picture of him in the 2007 T20 World Cup - one of the most memorable moments in his career.?
