ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga likely to return in T20 World Cup 2021.
ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Ace Sri Lankan speedster Lasith Malinga could possibly return to the national T20 side for the country in the forthcoming ICC events said the national selection committee chairman Pramodya Wickramasinghe.
Pramodya Wickramasinghe in conversation with the Morning Sports revealed that Malinga is in the plans of Sri Lanka Cricket for the upcoming T20 tours.
?We will talk to Lasith soon. He is in our plans for the forthcoming T20 tours, including the T20 World Cup coming up in October," said Wickramasinghe to the Morning Sports.
"We are working out a long-term plan aiming at the 2023 (50-over) World Cup. There, our main focus is to adjust ourselves to forming an accurate average in terms of two main aspects. Those are the age and the fitness," Wickramasinghe added.
The 37-years old Cricketer played his last ODI game on 26th July 2019 and post which he bid his adieu to the 50-overs format.
In January early this year, Malinga also took his retirement from the franchise cricket following which his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) released him from the squad. He is the leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with 170 wickets.
Wickramasinghe said that the team would require the services of Lasith Malinga being the best bowler and having so much experience.
Lasith is also in our plans. We always should not forget that he is one of the greatest bowlers in our country even in his present form. His records speak for that. There are two back-to-back T20 World Cups that are coming up, this year and next year. We are going to discuss our plans with him when we meet him in the next couple of days," said Wickramasinghe, a former Sri Lanka pace bowler.
Lasith Malinga who will be meeting the selection committee soon said he is looking forward to it.
?Even though I have said goodbye to the ODI and Test cricket, but I am still there for the T20Is. It will be important for me to understand how the team will require my services. In my career, I have made comebacks and proved myself many-a-times. So, I can perform well for my country,? said Lasith Malinga.
