England bagged two crucial match points and scaled up to second place in the T20 World Cup 2022 Points Table.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by six wickets to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Afghanistan won the toss and decided to have a bat. Small contributions from every player at the top and middle order helped Afghanistan reach a total of 144 in 20 overs.
In pursuit of a modest total, the Sri Lankan batters paced the innings quite nicely. Dhananjaya de Silva remained unbeaten at 66 runs score in 42 deliveries as he helped his side go over the rope against Afghanistan and get two match points.
In the other fixture of the day, England defeated New Zealand by 20 runs. England, batting first, scored 179 runs owing to valiant efforts from opener Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. While the skipper played 73 runs innings, Alex Hales scored 52 runs.
New Zealand lost wickets consistently while chasing the total set by the Englishmen. Their only surviving partnership came between Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips who kept winning hopes alive. But, in the end, the Kiwis could only score 159 runs and lost the fixture by 20 runs.
