T20 World Cup 2024: Match number 19 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 ended with India securing a nail biting victory against Pakistan by six runs at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium of New York on 9th June. It was a low scoring thriller and this win has propelled the Men in Blue to the top of Group A.
IND vs PAK Match Highlights
Babar Azam won the toss and opted to field first but the start of the game got delayed due to rain. But, the delay didn't last long and as soon as the game began, the Shaheens dealt an instant blow as Naseem Shah got rid of Virat Kohli in the second over while Shaheen Shah Afridi from the other end dismissed Rohit Sharma in just the third over of the Indian inning.
Rishabh Pant, batting at number three played some attacking shots and got company from Axar Patel from the other end who took the attack to the Pakistani bowlers as well. Pant got lucky on two occasions as Usman Khan dropped him twice and the wicketkeeper batsman made full use of those lifelines as he top scored with 42 runs in 31 balls.
Axar contributed with 20 runs in 18 deliveries but Naseem Shah cleaned him up in the eighth over. Following Patel's dismissal, the Men in Blue suffered a middle order collapse as no batter had an answer to the pace assault of the Green Shirts and eventually the Rohit Sharma - led team got bundled up for 119 runs.
Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf were the best Pakistani bowlers of the day as they ended the game with three wickets each while Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Shah Afridi took two and one wickets respectively. Iftikhar Ahmed and Imad Wasim went wicketless.
A target of 120 runs in 20 overall looked like a walk in the park for the Babar Azam - led team and they started the chase on a good note as well as the opening duo of captain Babar and wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan stitched a partnership of 26 runs in 28 deliveries. The Pakistanis were sitting at a pretty comfortable spot in the chase at the halfway mark but they weren't looking to attack the Indian bowlers and preferred to bat cautiously in a run a ball chase but it proved to be a massive mistake.
Babar started on an aggressive note but got dismissed in the powerplay and then Rizwan who looked well settled in the middle just couldn't get going and after getting struck twice on the gloves gave his wicket away to Jasprit Bumrah in the 14th over. Fakhar Zaman came in to bat at number four and attacked the Indian bowlers but he too gave his wicket away.
As the wickets kept falling just before the death overs phase, the Pakistani middle order came under a lot of pressure and even the poor deliveries weren't hit towards the boundary and eventually, the game went out of their grasp and the Indians won by six wickets.
The Shaheens are now on the verge of getting eliminated from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and even if they end up winning in their remaining two matches, it might not be enough to finish in the top two.
Talking about the performance of the Indian bowlers, ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah was the best bowler of the day as he picked up three crucial wickets and gave away just 14 runs in the process. He even picked up the man of the match award for his supreme bowling display. Hardik Pandya supported Bumrah well by dismissing two batters while Arshdeep and Axar took?one?scalp?each.
