IND vs ZIM: ?Captaincy? plays a huge role in the game of cricket, unlike several other sports. The current series against Zimbabwe has seen a new Indian skipper, Shubman Gill, in the absence of the senior pros. Shubman Gill was also seen leading the IPL franchise team Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 after they parted ways with title-winning captain <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardik_Pandya">Hardik Pandya</a>. Gill though had to see a major drop in form after being named the new captain. So young a captain was never seen in IPL before.

 Gill scored 890 runs in the previous edition of the IPL 2023 but saw a major drop in the next season with just 426 runs, which is not even half the score the promising young batter had scored in the last season. Alongside this, Gill was very inconsistent, not able to score well in over half of the matches he played in 2024; this proved that captaincy is too much pressure for the youngster. After such an unconvincing performance in the IPL, he could not make it to India?s T20 World Cup squad; however, despite all odds, Gill was chosen as the skipper of a young Indian team for their tour to Zimbabwe.

 However, taking them lightly went wrong for the Indian team in the series opener as Raza led Zimbabwe to shock the Men in Blue. Shubman Gill has not been in the best of touch, as he scored a run-a-ball 31 in the first game and could not lead the Men In Blue to victory with a low-score target of 116.

 India records an immense legacy with young captains, with legendary skipper Kapil Dev lifting the first ever World Cup for India just at the age of 24, the same as the current age of Shubman Gill. However, with several senior players remaining in the India side, with the likes of Pandya and Pant, the captaincy role for Gill seems to be too early a call. As believed by cricket analysts, Shubman Gill should be relieved of all burdens and given a free ticket to explore his hand with the willow. With the Sri Lanka series approaching hopefully, the new Indian coach will step in to provide someone else with the captaincy role, while Gill will be seen as India?s first-choice opening batsman and a probable contender to replace veteran Virat Kohli in the shortest format of the game.

Good news awaits the Prince of Indian Cricket Shubhman Gill ahead of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025. If he performs well in the upcoming ICC tournament, then he will dethrone Pakistan's Babar Azam at the top of the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings. He will move to the number one spot, overtaking the former Pakistani skipper, who is currently sitting at the top of the rankings.
As the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy commences, Babar is currently sitting at the top of the ODI Batting Rankings with 786 rating points to his name. Gill is at the 2nd spot with 781 rating points. However, after the 30-year-old failed to shine in the Triangular series versus New Zealand &amp; South Africa, Gill now has the chance to snatch the first position from the Pakistani batter.
The former Pakistani skipper, who opened the innings for the Shaheens in all three encounters of the Triangular series, could only manage to score 62 runs with the bat at a disappointing average of 20.67. The Prince of Indian Cricket, on the other hand, scored 259 runs at an average of 86.33 in the three-match ODI series against England, including two half-centuries and a century.
The Pakistani batter had first reached the top spot in the Batting Rankings four years ago in 2021. He had overtaken India's Virat Kohli, who had occupied the top spot for a long duration of 1,258 days but his reign came to an end as Babar overtook him.
Eventually, the 30-year-old lost the top spot later but he regained it in December after the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup, overtaking Shubman Gill of Team India. 2024 was the year of the T20 World Cup so majority of the teams were focused on the shortest format of the game, so Azam retained his top spot in the ODI Batting Rankings.
With the Prince of Indian Cricket looking in red hot form with the bat ahead of the Champions Trophy, his chances of securing the top spot are very high. But, Babar cannot be underestimated too as he's a world class player and he needs just one solid inning to get back in his best form.

Both players will enter the record books as soon as they score required number of runs. The special thing is that the records that these two are going to make will be happening for the first time. 
<h2>Shubman Gill has a chance to surpass Hashim Amla</h2>
The Prince of Indian Cricket Shubman Gill performed in a brilliant manner in the recently concluded three-match One Day International series versus England as his batting contributions helped his team white wash their opponents by a margin of 3-0. He scored a total of 259 runs in three games with the assistance of two fifties &amp; a centurycentury, making him the highest run getter in the series. 
In 50 One Day International matches for the Men in Blue, the 25-year-old has scored a total of 2,587 runs at average of more than 60, including seven hundreds, a double century and 15 fifties. In the third One Day International versus England, Gill achieved a record-breaking feat, becoming the quickest to score 2,500 runs in the format, surpassing the previous record holder Hashim Amla, who had achieved the feat in 53 innings.
The Prince of Indian Cricket now has a chance to break yet another record of Hashim Amla in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025. He requires just 413 runs to become the fastest batter in the history of the sport score 3,000 runs in One Day Cricket. Currently, South African legend Hashim Amla holds this record, who achieved this feat in 57 innings. 
The 25-year-old Gill still has six innings left to surpass the South African legend. Given his current form, he can easily break this record during the Champions Trophy, where Team India are guaranteed to take part in atleast three matches, and if they reach the final, then they will participate in five games. 
Shubman's excellent form with the bat in ODIs has seen him become the vice-captain of the Men in Blue in the upcoming Champions Trophy tournament. He's also being considered as a potential successor to Rohit Sharma as the next captain of Team India in One Day Cricket.

He has 15 innings left to break this record and in the match versus Bangladesh, the 36-year-old will have an excellent chance of doing exactly that.
Only two batters, Sachin Tendulkar &amp; Kumar Sangakarra have reached the 14,000 run mark in the 50 over fomat. The Little Master achieved this feat in his 350th inning while the Sri Lankan legend took 378 innings to reach the milestone. 
Another record which King Kohli will be eyeing is that of becoming the highest run getter for Team India in the Champions Trophy. He has scored 529 runs in 13 games in the tournament and needs just 173 runs to overtake Shikhar Dhawan (701 runs) and become the highest run scorer for the nation in the history of the tournament. 
If the former Indian skipper manages to score 263 runs in the Champions Trophy, he will also create the record of scoring the most number of runs in the history of the tournament. Currently, the Universe Boss Chris Gayle has this record to his name having scored 791 runs in the tournament.

The Indian Team, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, are currently taking part in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 where they are taking on Bangladesh in Dubai in their opening encounter of the tournament. Bangladeshi skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and asked the Men in Blue to bowl first. 
This decision didn't prove to be a good one as the Indian bowlers completely dominated the opposition batters in the powerplay itself, dismissing five Bangladeshi batters. While the duo of Harshit Rana &amp; Mohammad Shami dealt with the top-order batters, spin bowler Axar Patel took care of two middle-order batters in consecutive deliveries. 
The 29-year-old, who was bowling the ninth ball of the inning, had a great chance to pick up a hat-trick. He first dismissed opening batter Tanzid Hasan as he knicked the ball straight to wicketkeeper KL Rahul behind the stumps. After this, on the very next ball, he got the crucial scalp of Mushfiqur Rahim, who came in to bat at number five and went back to the pavilion immediately after getting caught by Rahul. 
Axar had a brilliant opportunity of picking up a hat-trick on the fourth delivery of his over, and he got the edge of the batter too but Indian skipper Rohit Sharma dropped the easy catch and denied Axar a well-deserved Hat-trick. Jaker Ali tried to hit the ball towards the cover region but the ball hit his bat and went towards the Indian Captain but he wasn't able to complete the catch. 
Rohit, frustrated with himself, slammed the ground three times with his right hand after dropping a sitter and quickly apologized to the left-arm spinner after committing a huge mistake.

After whitewashing England 3-0 in the three-match ODI Series, Team India is now preparing for their next mission. The next mission of the Indian Team led by Rohit Sharma is the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, which is going to be hosted by Pakistan. 
The tournament has already commenced with New Zealand securing a comfortable win over Mohammad Rizwan-led Pakistan in the opening encounter while the Men in Blue are currently taking on Bangladesh in Dubai in their opening encounter of the tournament. 
The Rohit Sharma-led team is scheduled to play all of their Champions Trophy 2025 matches in the city of Dubai after the BCCI refused to send the squad to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy due to security-related concerns. The Final of this marquee ICC event will be played on the 9th of March in Lahore if the Men in Blue don't qualify for the final and if they do then the Final will be played in Dubai. This tournament is returning after a long gap of 8 years. 
<h2>Can the Indian Team go on to become the first team to achieve this feat in the Champions Trophy? </h2>
The 2013 Champions Trophy winners are currently taking on Bangladesh in Dubai and post the conclusion of this game, they will play their second match versus Arch-Rivals Pakistan three days later on 23rd February. Their last group stage fixture is scheduled to be played versus New Zealand on 2nd March.
If the Rohit Sharma-led Team successfully secures victories in both of their opening encounters, then they will create a historic record. The Men in Blue currently hold the record of winning the highest number of matches (18) in the history of the Champions Trophy so far. They are followed by England in second place with 14 victories. 
If the 2013 Champions Trophy winners secure victories in both contests versus Bangladesh &amp; Pakistan, then they will register their 20th victories in the competition and this way they will become the first ever team to win 20 matches in the history of this tournament, a feat which no other team has been able do so far. 
In order to create this record, they need to defeat both Bangladesh &amp; Pakistan in the group stage games. They are scheduled to play three games in the group stage phase and to qualify for the semi-finals, India will have to win atleast two games out of three. If this happens, then surely the Indians will script history.

He struck again in the powerplay overs, dismissing Mehidy Hasan Miraz who knicked the ball straight into the hands of Shubman Gill standing at first slip. The 34-year-old's 200th wicket was the decisive one ae he got the better of Jaker Ali who hit the ball straight to Virat Kolhi standing near the boundary line and this was also the partnership braking scalp. 
Tailender Tanzim Hasan Sakib was his fourth prey as he played the ball on to the stumps and he finished it off by sending Taskin Ahmed back to the pavillion in the death overs and this way, he completed his fifer.

Pakistan's hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy has already faced criticism for its organisational shortcomings. On Monday, security personnel detained a fan for waving an Indian flag during a match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. A fresh controversy has erupted after he was allegedly taken away and beaten. Several media reports have reported on the matter. Videos of the incident have also gone viral on social media. 
In the video, officers can be seen dragging the man and snatching the Indian flag from his hands. He was dragged out of his seat but the officers didn't reveal his identity or the nationality of the man.

According to the media reports, this incident reportedly took place during the Champions Trophy clash between Ashes Rivals Australia and England at the Gaddafi Stadium. A Cricket fan in the stands wearing black trousers, a black jacket and sunglasses was spotted waiving the Indian flag. In a video circulating on social media, several security officers were seen approaching the fan and forcibly dragging him from the stands. 
But was he an Indian citizen or not? The authorities there did not give any information about what happened there. However, reports say that the man was detained for holding the Indian flag.
The video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms as Pakistan's behavior is being criticized heavily. The social media users say that the actions of the security personnels were not justified and such auctions reflect the hatred people in Pakistan have for India. Discussions over the two nations' tense cricketing relationship have become more heated as a result of the incident. 
The controversy has become one of the growing security concerns at the eight team tournament. As Pakistan tries it's best to re-establish it's image as a safe destination to play International Cricket, such incidents can only further hurt their efforts. By reacting in an aggressive manner to the mere waiving of a flag, they seem to have forgotten how foreign fans and players will participate in future tournaments in Pakistan.
