<p>Cricket's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently revealed the updated ICC Men's Test player rankings on the 11th of September, 2024.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The updated rankings see England's hard hitting batter Harry Brook slip down by seven positions, while India's three batters have risen in the rankings by one-spot each.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Joe Root, the premier batter of the Three Lions, continues to reign supreme at the top of ICC?s Test batting rankings despite scoring just 13 and 12 runs in the third test match at the Oval against Sri Lanka, though his rating points have seen a decrease from 922 to 899, which provides an opportunity to New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and Aussie batter Steve Smith to close down the gap between themselves and Root.</p>



<p>Similarly, another English batter, Harry Brook, has dropped in the batting rankings by seven spots to the 12th position after managing to score just 19 and three-runs in the third test against the Sri Lankans.</p>



<p>Ollie Pope?s inning of 154 runs has helped him make a jump of seven places to joint 27th spot along with Angelo Mathews while young sensation Jamie Smith moved by six places to the 30th rank after scoring a quick fifty in the second inning.</p>

<p>However, England batters were not the only ones who made gains in the rankings. Six batters of Sri-Lanka have made massive gains in ICC?s recently updated Test batting rankings thanks to their historic eight-wicket victory over England in the third &amp; final Test-Match at the Oval.</p>



<p>The Island Nation secured their first away test victory in more-than-a-decade in the third-test match against the Three Lions, with captain Dhananjaya-de-Silva, opener Pathum Nissanka and middle order batter Kamindu Mendis starring with the bat.</p>



<p>Skipper De Silva was the top scorer for his side having played a crucial knock of 69 runs in the first inning, which allowed him to achieve his Test career?s best ranking batting wise, as he jumped from 16th to the 13th rank.</p>

<p>Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis on the other hand, also achieved their Test career?s highest ranks, with the left handed batter rising by six spots to the 19th place thanks to his fifty against England while Nissanka?s fantastic knocks of 64 and 127* runs helped him to make a huge jump of 42 places to the 39th place.</p>



<p>Talking about the Indian players, despite not playing a test match since March of this year, the trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal have seen improvisations in their test rankings.</p>



<p>The Indian captain has moved to the fifth position, while his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal is now sitting at the sixth place of ICC?s Test batting-rankings. Kohli, on the other hand, has occupied the seventh position.</p>

<p>The Sri Lankan Cricket Team have announced their official starting 11 for the first test of the two-match test series versus New Zealand. The first game will be played on September 18th at Galle?s Galle International Cricket Stadium.</p>



<p>After performing exceptionally well with the bat in the England series, Kamindu Mendis has been given a promotion in the batting-order and the 25 year old will now be seen batting at number five.</p>



<p>The Southpaw has featured in six Test-encounters for Sri Lanka and he has scored 695 runs at a mind-blowing average of 77.22. In the England series, Kamindu scored 267 runs in five innings, which includes a hundred in the Manchester test match.</p>



<p>Following the fifty he scored in the third and final test match against England, Sanath Jayasuriya, the interim-head-coach of the Island Nation, confirmed that the Sri Lankan management is thinking of sending Kamindu to bat higher up in the batting-order and the test series versus New Zealand rectifies that statement.</p>



<p>Mendis has never come out to bat above the number six position in the longest format of the game.&nbsp; Batting at the fifth position will be an advantage for the 25-year-old and playing in favourable conditions will be an icing on the cake for him but it's surely going to be a difficult task.</p>



<p>In terms of other batting order changes, wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal has been given a promotion as a reward for his impressive performances with the bat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>He hit two fifties in the recently conducted test-series versus England and he will now be seen batting at number three against New Zealand.</p>



<p>All-Rounder Angelo Mathews has also been promoted to number four, followed by Kamindu Mendis at number five. Skipper Dhananjaya De Silva will be see batting at the sixth position.</p>

<p>Prabath Jayasuriya, Ramesh Mendis, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara form the bowling unit of the Dhananjaya De Silva-led team for the first test match.</p>



<p>Prabath, who was dropped from the starting 11 in the Oval test match versus England, makes his return to the side and he will be getting assistance from off-spinner Ramesh Mendis, who last played a test match in 2023 versus Pakistan.</p>

<p>Harsha Bhogle is famously known as the "Voice of cricket." He has always given blunt remarks in the betterment of cricket and is a respected commentator and journalist in the cricket world. The 63-year-old has come up with his test team of the year, what he thinks is the best set of the players or performers in 2024.</p>
<p>He has picked up several performers from different teams while some big names missed the feature in his team. His team has most players from England and India, with a count of three, and one each from Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan. Interestingly, he didn't pick any Australians in the squad.</p>
<h2>Harsha Bhogle picks Jasprit Bumrah as the captain of his "Test Team of the Year 2024"</h2>
<p>There have been many great individual performances throughout the year. Bhogle chose two dynamic left-handers to open the innings for his team. He picked up England's Ben Duckett, who has scored 1100 runs, and picked up Yashasvi Jaiswal as his partner. Jaiswal has been impressive in 2024.</p>
<p>The Indian opener has scored a total of 1332 runs in 27 innings at an excellent average of 52. He scored two double centuries as well. Jaiswal will be in action in the upcoming Boxing Day Test against Australia and can add more runs to his tally.</p>
<p>In an interaction with Cricbuzz, Bhogle said, "<strong>Yashasvi Jaiswal did everything that was asked of him as an opener, so he is my first pick in the Test Team of 2024. I have picked Ben Duckett because of the runs he has scored across the world</strong>." The 63-year-old picked Kane Williamson and Joe Root at nos. 3 and 4.</p>
<p>Williamson has scored 1013 runs at 59.58, while Root is the leading scorer in 2024. He has scored 1556 runs with six centuries and five half-centuries in 31 innings. Bhogle picked star English batters Harry Brook (1100 runs at 55). He also picked Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis at no. 6, who has scored 1049 runs at an incredible average of 75 with five hundreds.</p>
<p>For wicketkeeper, he chose Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan and picked Ravindra Jadeja at no. 8. Jadeja has 44 wickets and 500 runs in 11 Tests this year. Interestingly, he didn't pick any full-time captain to lead his side. He picked Jasprit Bumrah to lead his team. Bumrah has 62 wickets in 12 tests. The other bowlers are Gus Atkinson (52 wickets in 11 Tests) and Kagiso Rabada (32 wickets in 7 matches).</p>
