IPL 2021: Rajasthan Royals signs Kumar Sangakkara as the director of cricket.



Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021: The Rajasthan based franchise signs Kumar Sangakkara as the director of cricket operations for the upcoming fourteenth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise on Sunday took Twitter to announce the news among the fans. Sangakkara will join the squad immediately and will start the work process.



The former Sri Lankan skipper is right now seated as the president of Marylebone Cricket Club. He will be responsible for all cricketing actions inside the franchise. Sangakkara will be the man behind every cricketing action of the franchise whether it is auction plan, strategies, coaching structure, talent discovery and development.



Sangakkara after the news rolled out said he is delighted to be a part of the franchise and will work towards the betterment of the team.



?It is a privilege to join Rajasthan Royals as director of cricket and I am really excited for the new chapter. To oversee the cricketing action of the franchise in the most happening cricket league in the world, as well as building the strategies along with other instrumental work with the management, is an opportunity that really motivated me. I have really enjoyed talks with the leadership group of the franchise over the past couple of weeks and can't wait to get going. The franchise includes some of the big names of the game and it will be fun to work with them,? Sangakkara said.

Rajasthan Royals new skipper Sanju Samson also showed his excitement for Sangakkara?s signing as the director of the cricket.

He himself is someone who had a great cricketing career for himself and obviously knows the modern game of cricket. It is always a plus for the franchise to have a director of such a calibre. He was a great wicketkeeper and I would love to work with him. Learning from someone who led his side to the top level in his time is really inspiring.? One of the greats of modern-day cricket, Sangakkara in his 16 years long career amassed over 28,000 runs for Sri Lanka. He has the highest Test batting average of any players in last 46 years.

Vivo IPL 2021: Sanju Samson has evolved as the captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR) says Jos Buttler.



Vivo IPL 2021: Rajasthan Royals (RR) English recruit Jos Buttler heaped praises on young skipper Sanju Samson. Buttler feels that it was a great learning experience for the rookie skipper and he has evolved as a player as the tournament progressed.



The Rajasthan Royals (RR) management replaced former skipper Steve Smith with Sanju Samson in January before the IPL 2021 Auctions.



?It was a great learning experience for him. And I think, as the tournament was going along, at the halfway stage, he was really growing into the role, looking to put together some better, more consistent performances towards the end of the season as a side,? Buttler said in a virtual interactive session arranged by the Royals.



Samson managed to lead his side to three wins in seven games before the elite T20 competition was suspended midway due to rising covid-19 cases in the bio-bubbles.



?I?ve really enjoyed playing under Sanju?s captaincy. I don?t think it changed him at all as a person. He?s quite a free spirited, very relaxed kind of guy and he tried to get that across to the team and that?s how he wanted us to play as a side.?



Buttler feels that to be a successful leader of the side one must be authentic and Sanju has all traits of that.



RR director of cricket operations Kumar Sangakkara was also present in the interactive live session where he applauded a couple of young guns of the side.



Sangakkara was highly impressed with Riyan Parag and said that he has the potential not only to serve Royals but also Indian cricket in the future.



?For us, Riyan Parag is a very, very special player. I think he?s got a huge amount to contribute to not just Royals, but also to Indian cricket in the future, a very special talent that needs care, nurturing and development.?

The man under whom Australia won two 50 overworld cups, and won innumerable matches against the toughest of opponents deserves to be called "THE BEST"! It was under his reign as a captain that Australia became literally "Unbeatable".&nbsp;



The credit for their sheer dominance in world cricket for such a long period of time must go to a certain Ponting. When Ricky Ponting was handed the captaincy responsibilities of Mumbai Indians in 2013, the management expected him to perform his captaincy duties equally well for the franchise as well. However, what followed was a total mess.&nbsp;



Mumbai didn't have a properly good start to the season as they lost 3 of the first 6 games that they played and Ponting gave up on his captaincy. The fact that he asked the management to relieve him of the role proves the fact that the entrustment of the extra responsibilities on an ageing Ponting wasn't really a good idea.&nbsp;



The major reason behind such an unfortunate event of the downfall was sure because of the increasing age of the Australian which had pretty clearly marked the beginning of downfall in his career. The baton was then passed on to a young Rohit Sharma who then went on to win 5 titles for Mumbai.

Another surprising name in the list is that of Kumar Sangakkara. The Sri Lankan legend who had for the first time been given the captaincy duties back in 2010 went on to lead three different teams in his IPL career. The first team that Sangha got to lead was King's XI Punjab in the IPL 2010. The season however didn't go as planned as Sangakkara in his debut season as a captain could win just 3 of the 13 matches he lead his team in and was thus dropped midway of the season.&nbsp;



Next season he took up the leadership responsibilities of his new team, Deccan Chargers, a side that won the IPL in 2009. The results, however, showed no signs of improvement as Sangakkara failed to make any sort of impact in the two-season he lead the chargers for. The team failed to make the playoffs in two consecutive seasons under Sangha. After the Chargers were bought by the sun TV network in 2012, the franchise changed its name to Sunrisers Hyderabad.&nbsp;



That however didn't bring any change to Sangakkara's captaincy results as he managed to win less than 50% of the matches he lead his side in before the team management took back the captaincy from him. Thus his captaincy reign in IPL remains to be one that he along with his fans would like to forget.

The next captaincy opportunity came in IPL 2014 for the Delhi Daredevils who had newly included him in their squad prior to that season. This marked the end of his captaincy reign in IPL.&nbsp;



Though he went on to win trophies in the upcoming years in the BBL, his captaincy stats in IPL are nowhere close to the calibre of a player of his kind.

Thus the captaincy responsibilities only added to his troubles as his abilities on the pitch seemed to be pulled down both collectively and individually.&nbsp;



His reign as a captain ended with his failure in Delhi Daredevils as he failed to deliver in his last season as a result of which his side finished at the bottom of the table.

Prithvi Shaw did not find any takers as the Mumbai batter went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. Prithvi, who had a base price of Rs 75 lakh in the auction, was released by Delhi Capitals but he did not attract any bids from the ten franchises.

Shaw has been part of the Delhi franchise since returning as the U-19 World Cup winning captain in 2018 and was bought for 1.2 Crores. Ahead of the 2022 auction, the Mumbai batter was retained by DC for Rs. 7.5 Crore but the past few seasons hasn't been great for the 25-year-old.
Speaking to Sports Today, Jindal said that Shaw is a great kid but needed a jolt to get up from his slumber. The DC co-owner feels that Shaw needs to work hard, get back the love of the game and get disciplined. Jindal ended by saying he hopes the Mumbai batter can return back to his best form
Delhi has backed Prithvi Shaw a lot. DC had hoped that he is a powerplay player and would hit 6 boundaries in one over. And he did that too. He hit Shivam Mavi for 6 fours in an over. IND vs ENG: Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his playing XI for the first T20I against England. The match between the two teams is all set to take place on Wednesday (22nd January) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
India and England will be locking horns with each other in the five-match T20I series. Both teams have a mixed combination of seniors and youngsters in the team, and with the way they have played of late, it's fair to say that it will be an exciting series to watch. 
Coming to the first T20I, Ravichandran Ashwin backed Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma to open the innings for the team. The duo has been doing a decent job together as an opener and would be hoping to carry on the same form in the upcoming first match. 
Sanju Samson was at his exceptional best in the T20Is last year as he slammed three tons. While on the other hand, Abhishek Sharma hasn't been able to maintain consistency. Hence the series will be extremely important for him with the bat. 
At No.3, Ravichandran Ashwin picked Tilak Varma. The left-hander oozed his class with the bat in the last series against South Africa. He batted at No.3 and slammed two back-to-back centuries. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav, as per Ashwin, will bat at No.4.
Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel are the three all-rounders picked by Ravichandran Ashwin in his Indian XI for the first IND vs ENG T20I. They are expected to play a major role with the bat and ball. 
Rinku Singh also has been picked by Ravichandran Ashwin in his Indian XI for the first IND vs ENG team. He will be taking the role of finisher while there was no place for Ravi Bishnoi, who hard has put a foot wrong in his T20I career. Varun Chakravarthy will be there as per Ashwin. 
Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh are the two fast bowlers picked by Ravichandran Ashwin for the first IND vs ENG XI. Shami will be making his comeback to the team after a year, while Arshdeep will be keen to make an impact.

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali talked about the delay in the squad of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for the Pakistan team. He said that it might look like they are scared of announcing the team, but it seems that they don't know what to do. 
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is around the corner and all the teams have named their squad for the tournament except the hosts Pakistan. The Men in Green are yet to announce the team even though the deadline of 12th January has already been surpassed by a long margin. 
India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan have all revealed their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This has made many speculate about why Pakistan isn't announcing their squad for the tournament, which is less than one month away. 
There have been several reports that Pakistan will be announcing their squad for the tournament soon. They are awaiting the fitness of a few players, and hence, they will soon be naming the team. Some reports also have revealed the players who will be playing, but an official announcement is yet to come.

Amid all this, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali commented on the same, saying that no one knows what is happening. He speculated that they might be waiting for the fitness report on Saim Ayub. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained: 
"Pakistan kya darr gaya jo abhi tak team announce nahi ki? Nahi dara nahi hai. Samajh nahi aa rahi hai -- karein to kya karein? (Is Pakistan scared to announce their squad? No, it isn't, just unsure what to do and what not). The biggest issue is whether Saim Ayub can return fit or not. It's still not clear." 
It remains to be seen when will Pakistan announce the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament is all set to take place from 19th February, with the final all set to be played on 9th March.
