The Hundred Schedule, Teams, Matches, Players, Squads, Coaches all you need to know.

The Hundred: With the evolution of cricket in the modern era, multiple overseas leagues have been established and have their own identity. To continue the custom but with a different taste and a couple of added flavours, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) earlier proposed a 100-balls a side competition called the ‘The Hundred’.

The competition will see its inaugural season this summer in England, having been delayed for one year courtesy Covid-19 pandemic which originated from Wuhan.

After a couple of backlashes from the experts as the modern T20 and other such short leagues are eating up the craze for Test Cricket among the young cricketers, the ‘The Hundred’ had to go through a lot of validations.

The idea for the format which came in 2016 got executed in 2019 and the first season was scheduled to be held in 2020. The dreaded pandemic forced the ECB officials to postpone the tournament, just as various other leagues either got cancelled or postponed.

The Hundred Format:

‘The Hundred’ has enforced a lot of changes in the original cricket rules to make the sport easier to understand for the new audience. In fact, the basic idea behind the proposed league is to attract young people and wives to the sport during English summer.

The tweaks include the removal of Leg Before Wicket (LBW) appeal completely and a 25 balls powerplay.

Here is the format of the league:

  • 100 balls per innings.
  • No LBW appeal.
  • 25-balls powerplay given at the start of each inning.
  • Switching ends after 10 balls.
  • Bowlers will bowl either five or ten consecutive balls.
  • No bowler is allowed to bowl more than 20 balls in an inning.
  • Two and a half minutes Strategic Time Out for the Bowling team.
  • Teams are entitled to call for time outs.
  • Not more than two fielders outside the 30-yard circle during the power play.
  • One game will last nearly two and a half hours.

Squad Rules:

  • A team to have 15 members.
  • Not more than three overseas players are allowed in a team.
  • At least one English test cricketer will be signed by each team.
