Watch: Smriti Mandhana, team India celebrate she got sold to RCB for 3.4 Crores in WPL Auction: Team India opener batter Smriti Mandhana made her name in the history books as she became the first-ever player to get sold in the Women's Premier League, WPL Auction. Mandhana was eventually sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) following a bidding war against Mumbai Indians for a staggering INR 3.4 Crores.
Smriti Mandhana's skill set brought Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) against each other for a long bidding war in the WPL Auction, which was eventually won by RCB at INR 3.4 Crores. Now both the 18-number jersey Indian players will represent the RCB in the IPL and WPL.
Presently, team India is in South Africa for the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2023 and all the players watched the inaugural WPL Auction on a big screen together. All the players were seen cheering for Smriti Mandhana, who sparked a bidding contest between MI and RCB, in the wee hours of the event in Mumbai.
In a video that surfaced on the internet, Smriti Mandhana's Indian teammates can be seen going berserk and cheering for her as the bidding war unfolded before she got sold to RCB as the first-ever WPL buy. Besides, Smriti Mandhana, RCB also managed to get hold of Shopie Devine (NZ) for INR 50 Lakhs, Ellyse Perry (AUS) for INR 1.7 Crores, Renuka Singh for INR 1.5 Crores and Richa Gosh for INR 1.9 Crores.
In another crucial development, Mandhana, who is the vice-captain of the Indian team, is likely to lead the RCB franchise in the WPL, said Mike Hesson, RCB's director of cricket.
"Everyone knows Mandhana and Perry, we were pretty committed to the couple of people we wanted to get. we're very happy to get such quality players. it's a dream result for us to get Mandhana, Perry and Devine. Smriti has got plenty of captaincy experience and is familiar with the Indian conditions so highly likely [she'll be captain]," said Mike Hesson.
