Watch: Suryakumar Yadav stunned in Ranji Trophy Quarters, this pacer sends his middle-stump for a carthwheel
Team India's T20 International captain Suryakumar Yadav's poor form continued in the Ranji Trophy quarter finals as his batting woes got exposed once again. He proved to be a failure in the quarter final clash of the 2025 Ranji Trophy versus Haryana at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium of Kolkata.
He recently scored just 28 runs with the bat in the five-match T20 International series verus England and questions are constantly being raised about his spot in the team. After the Men in Blue lifted the T20 World Cup Trophy last year after defeating the South Africans in the summit clash, the BCCI suddenly opted to hand over the leadership duties to SKY.
At the same time, Fast Bowling All-rounder Hardik Pandya was ignored for the leadership role despite him being the vice-captain of the National Team during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Indian captain got exposed once again
Surya opted to play the Ranji Trophy quarter-final match for Mumbai versus Haryana at the Eden Gardens stadium of Kolkata in order to find a way to regain his lost form. However, he looked completely clueless with the bat here too.
The 34-year-old was clean bowled after managing to score just nine runs in the Quarter Final clash of the first-class tournament versus Haryana. He walked into the middle at number five for Mumbai in the first inning, but he was completely out classed by Haryana's Sumit Kumar. If we combine SKY's domestic and international cricket numbers, then we can see that he has managed to score just 37 runs in the last six innings.
Talking about the match, Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Mumbai won the toss and elected to bat first but they didn't get off to a good start. Opener Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for a golden duck by CSK bowler Anshul Kamboj. Then the duo of Akash Anand (10 runs) and Siddhesh Lad (4 runs) followed suit as well, putting the Ajinkya Rahane-led team in trouble.
Experienced Indian batting duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Shiva Dube walked out on the field to stabilize the sinking ship of Mumbai but their stay was cut short as well as Yadav became the victim of Sumit Kumar while Dube was dismissed off the bowling of Ajit Chahal, managing to score just 28 runs with the bat.
The biggest blow to Mumbai came in the form of captain Ajinkya Rahane, who became the victim of Kamboj after scoring 31 runs. Mumbai lost their first 6 wickets at a mere score of 94 runs.
After becoming the full time skipper of Team India in the shortest format of the game, Surya has managed to score just 258 runs in 15 T20I matches at an embarrassing average of 18.42. He has scored a total of 2,598 runs for India in 83 T20 International games at a good average of 38.20 with the help of four centuries and 21 fifties.
After Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma, the 34-year-old is the third highest run getter for the Men in Blue in the shortest format of the game. SKY took over the responsibility of India's full-time captain in T20i's during the Sri Lanka tour of last year.
