World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated: Afghanistan's campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023 has come to an end following a five-wicket loss against South Africa in their last league-stage fixture held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Although, nervy, South Africa managed to somehow go past the finishing line and end their league stage on a winning note. South Africa subsequently finished in the second spot in the World Cup 2023 Points Table, while Afghanistan had to settle with the sixth rank in the points table updated on November 10.
Afghanistan's hopes for posing as a contender for the ICC World Cup 2023 Semi-Finals also ended subsequently with a five-wicket loss against South Africa. Earlier, Afghanistan, New Zealand and Pakistan were engaged in the race to claim the fourth vacant semi-final spot, however, now the challenge has been reduced to just New Zealand and Pakistan.
Afghanistan, batting first in Ahmedabad, scored 244 runs in 50 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai top scored the innings with an unbeaten innings of 97 runs in 107 deliveries. Omarzai was aided by a couple of batters with their small yet handy contributions through the innings.
It was a modest chase for South Africa as they began the hunt. The Protea openers started off with a 64-run opening stand. However, Afghanistan bounced back with two wickets in quick succession. Then a partnership between Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram began to build. Again Afghanistan came back and removed the set batters to put pressure on the Proteas.
Though a couple of more wickets fell in quick intervals, the overall total wasn't daunting enough for South Africa to get derailed. Rassie van der Dussen played an unbeaten knock of 76 runs and took his side home along with Andile Phehlukwayo, who remained unbeaten at 39 runs.
Eventually, South Africa chased the 244 runs target in 47.3 overs after losing half of the side.
