WPL 2025: Who won yesterday's WPL match between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru & the Mumbai Indians?
A mouth-watering clash took place between arch-rivals Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This was the 7th match of the Tata Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 and since both teams are the joint most successful teams in the history of the competition, it made the contest even more interesting.
It was an incredible nail-biting encounter as Mumbai Indians' 4-wicket victory has left the Bengaluru audience astonished but thoroughly amused! This match was a true delight for cricket lovers, with twists and turns that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The fans received their money's worth, seeing a memorable contest that will live in their memories for a long time!
The contest kicked off with Harmanpreet Kaur, the skipper of MI winning the toss & opting to field first, aiming to take full advantage of the fresh surface. Defending Champions Bengaluru, captained by Smriti Mandhana, got off to an amazing start as the skipper showed her aggressive brand of Cricket from the very first over, playing a blistering knock of 26 runs in just 13 deliveries.
However, she wasn't able to stay at the crease for a long duration as seamer Shabnim Ismail (1-36) got the better of her in the 3rd over as Smriti hit the ball straight up in the air and wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia grabbed an easy catch to send the RCB captain back to the pavilion.
The MI bowlers didn't stop there as two overs later, Nat Sciver-Brunt got the crucial wicket of Danni Wyatt-Hodge (9 runs) as the Aussie batter hit the ball directly into the hands of Hayley Matthews at short third and her dismissal left the hosts at 48-2 in 5 overs.
Following the dismissal of Wyatt-Hodge, young Raghvi Bisht (1 run) walked out to bat at number four in front of a packed Bengaluru crowd and she was hoping to kick off her WPL career on an impressive note in front of the franchise's home crowd but not to be as Hayley Matthews dismissed her right at the stroke of the conclusion of the powerplay.
Three back-to-back dismissals left the home side in trouble as they ended the powerplay at the score of 54-3 and the Mumbai Indians seemed to be in full control of the proceedings. They kept the Bengaluru batters under pressure by bowling in a disciplined manner and their sharp fielding efforts also proved to be a plus point for them.
However, the turning point of the first inning came with the crucial partnership between the duo of Richa Ghosh & Ellyse Perry. They steadied the sinking RCB ship, rotating the strike quite well and finding boundaries at the correct moments. Ghosh played second fiddle to her Aussie partner at the other end which allowed Perry to take full charge.
She batted right till the end and the death overs witnessed her rampage as she helped her team add valuable runs in the final stages of the RCB inning. Her exceptional knock of 88 runs in 43 deliveries at a monstrous strike rate of 188.37 helped the Defending Champions to post a competitive total of 167-7 on the board.
In terms of the bowling performance of the Mumbai Indians, Amanjot Kaur was the pick of the bowlers, picking up three wickets at the expense of just 22 runs while Nar Sciver-Brunt (1-40), Sanskriti Gupta (1-3), Hayley Matthews (1-37) and Shabnim Ismail (1-36) picked up one wicket a piece.
Talking about the run chase of the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team, their run chase of 167 runs got off to a fast start with 66 runs coming in the powerplay phase. Nat Sciver-Brunt was brilliant, scoring 42 runs in just 21 balls with a strike rate of over 200, but she was dismissed after the strategic timeout, which put the inaugural champions in a difficult position. But then Amanjot Kaur and Harmanpreet Kaur took over, forming an important 62-run partnership. In the 19th over, Amanjot Kaur nearly sealed the victory for Mumbai by taking Kanika Ahuja for 16 runs, which was the game-changing moment. Although Harmanpreet Kaur led the chase with a half-century, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Amanjot Kaur, and others made significant contributions.
Bengaluru's bowling performance was patchy, alternating between brilliant and difficult spells. They had a rough start but got back on track in the middle of the game before losing it in the last few overs. With three wickets to her name, Georgia Wareham was the most impressive bowler, followed by Kim Garth with two and Ekta Bisht with one. Mumbai's batting power was eventually too strong for the Bengaluru bowling squad, despite some outstanding individual efforts.
