The IPL governing committee have done their part as they have now announced the rules for retention before the teams enter the IPL mega-auction. The committee has announced several new laybacks into the system. Among the most benefitted teams stand the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians.

The whopping increase in net worth would already have players retained less as many teams would be looking to better their team balance with newer players in the lot. Also, many players who have retired from the game for a long now can be retained under the uncapped player’s category.

The retention rule is worth upto 75 crores which also provides them with a huge opportunity to select 6 players to be retained alongside the usage of the right-to-match retention card.

Among many franchises, the Mumbai Indians are among the teams that benefit the most from these rules of high-budget retention.

5 possible players to be retained ahead of the IPL mega-auction

5. Tilak Varma

The promising youngster from Andhra has been Mumbai Indians’ best batter for the two previous seasons, since when he was drafted into the MI side. The left-handed middle-order batter emerged as their second-highest run-getter for two reasons behind the likes of SKY and Rohit Sharma.

Varma can be an asset and a player in the long run for the franchise as they might look to rope in the 22-year-old as a retained player this time around as well.

4. Hardik Pandya

The MI skipper from 2024, was brought for a whopping amount from the Gujarat Titans with whom he gave wonderful results as a skipper. However, the veteran’s return to his root franchise didn’t go well as he felt the heat of replacing MI’s most-loved captain Rohit Sharma.

Pandya who is often considered the best all-rounder in the format, earned his reputation of a match-winner back when he helped India win the T20 World Cup.

3. Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian bowling maestro has had the most exemplary career one could have in the IPL, as he is approaching the likes of Malinga and Bravo to overtake them as the highest wicket-taker among pace bowlers.

The legendary T20I bowler and Player of the Tournament from the T20i World Cup will be the player retained by the franchise even if they would have to retain only a single player.

2. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma the legendary opener from the Mumbai franchise, turned in the batter who has startling numbers for Mumbai. Though it was much in the buzz that the player might be released ahead of IPL 2025 by the Mumbai Indians.

However, recent updates suggest that Rohit might be backed further to remain with the Indians and once again be the inevitable part of their long journey if MI can level up their performance this time around.

1. Suryakumar Yadav

India’s currently announced T20I skipper and legendary batter has made him an eminent part of the shortest format. SKY will be remembered for his historic catch that changed the fates of Indians in the final over of the World Cup.

SKY can be considered by the Mumbai Indians in the role of a skipper for the next season replacing Hardik Pandya after his unconvincing start as an MI skipper. He has also been their prime batter for many seasons since 2018.
