IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians roped in Lasith Malinga as bowling?Coach

IPL 2024: The 39-year-old former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has returned home to the five-time IPL winning team Mumbai Indians in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League. Mumbai Indians has appointed him as the bowling coach in IPL 2024. Malinga will replace former Kiwi fast bowler Shane Bond.

The Mumbai Indians have not yet made a firm decision regarding the tenure of their current bowling coach, Shane Bond, according to a report from the news agency PTI. Bond was hired as MI's bowling coach in 2015 and naturally collaborated with Malinga while he was a member of the team. A source told PTI that Bond's contract with MI is still in effect.

Malinga participated in 139 games for Mumbai and recorded 195 wickets at a 7.12 economy rate. He has taken the sixth-most wickets in this league. He is the joint sixth highest wicket taker in this league.

Malinga had previously served as the team's mentor in 2018. He made a comeback a year later, co-leading the team's bowling attack with Jasprit Bumrah, and played a key role in making the team champion. After retiring in 2021, he served as the Rajasthan Royals' fast bowling coach in 2022.

Significantly, Lasith Malinga had a very prosperous career with the Mumbai Indians. He led the team to five championships, includes four IPL championships (2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019) and Champions League T20 in 2011.

Malinga took over as the fast bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals in 2022 after quitting cricket in 2021. The Rajasthan team competed in the finals in 2022. The team, however, was unable to even make the playoffs this season (IPL 2023) and placed fifth overall. For bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer, it would be significant if Malinga were to become Mumbai's bowling coach. Additionally, bowlers like Arjun Tendulkar and Akash Madhwal will be a huge help.
